Many workers in India have attempted to improve the nutritive value of wheat bhoosa by treatment with alkali. This method did not prove to be economically viable due to the high cost of alkali. In recent years the poor quality straws have been treated with ammonia to improve the nitrogen contents as well as the dry matter digestibility. In the present studies ammoniated wheat bhoosa was fed to adult cattle to assess the effect on intake and digestibility of nutrients and to find out if ammoniated bhoosa can be fed as a maintenance ration.

Abstract

Many workers in India have attempted to improve the nutritive value of wheat bhoosa by treatment with alkali. This method did not prove to be economically viable due to the high cost of alkali. In recent years the poor quality straws have been treated with ammonia to improve the nitrogen contents as well as the dry matter digestibility. In the present studies ammoniated wheat bhoosa was fed to adult cattle to assess the effect on intake and digestibility of nutrients and to find out if ammoniated bhoosa can be fed as a maintenance ration.
