Kelevan is a chlordecone derivative used in a number of countries as an insecticide, mainly for control of the potato beetle and the banana ischolar_main borer. Kelevan is metabolized in the mammalian body and in the environment back to chlordecone. Though kelevan, which is moderately toxic, is degraded quite rapidly to other caged structure products, its major metabolite is known to persist in the soil for several years.
