Nature has provided a rich store house of herbal remedies to cure all ailments of mankind. India has a vast and inexhaustible resource of drugs of plant origin. In recent years, interest in medicinal plants has increased considerably. The medicinal properties of plants are associated with their chemical constituents. In early 19th century, the isolation of active principles of some medicinal plants had introduced the modern research in to the field of bioactive molecules of plant origin. With advance made in chromatographic techniques as well as in spectroscopy, it has become possible to purify and unravel the structures of complex metabolites of several medicinal plants.
