Issues in the Prevalence of Low Birth Weight in South India

Prevention of low birth weight (LBW; < 2500 g), which affects nearly 30 per cent of infants born in India, is a public health priority. LBW includes infants born prematurely (<37 weeks of gestation) or with intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR; <10th for gestational age). Since the majority of LBW infants in India and most developing countries are a result of IUG R, studies that explore the etiology of IUGR and interventions aimed at preventing foetal growth retardation are urgently needed.
