Kidneys are the most important excretory organs within the human body. The word excretion means the removal of metabolic waste substances from the body. This "metabolic waste" is the large number of chemical reactions that occur in the cells, tissues and organs. Of these substances, some of the by-products and end-products of metabolism are toxic and have to be removed from the body, before they will poison the body tissues. The nephron is the basic structural and functional unit of the kidney. Its chief function is to regulate the concentration of water and soluble substances like sodium salts by filtering the blood, reabsorbing what is needed and excreting the rest as urine. In humans, a normal kidney contains 800000 to 1.5 million nephrons.
