Accurate discharge measurement in open channels is essential for water resources planning, water and sediment budget analysis, hydrologic modeling, reservoir operation, flood mitigation. Long-throated flumes are coming into general use in discharge measurement because they can be easily fitted into complex channel shapes as well as simple shapes. And also provide cost-effective, practical and flexible capabilities for measuring discharge. 'Winflume' software allows the user to calibrate the existing design and to make new design of long throated flume. Based on channel dimensions and conditions of canal an attempt is made to theoretically design a new flume to measure the discharge accurately. With so many iterations, three acceptable designs were considered with compound cross-sections. The three designs were further studied for hydraulic flow conditions. Among the three flumes, the flume with trapezoidal compound crosssection resulted the best performance.Keywords

For efficient and judicious use of water resources, an accurate design and high quality optimization of the check basin irrigation system is necessary. BASDEV of SURDEV model was used to evaluate the check basin irrigation system of size 30 m × 45 m for medium soils in Bapatla, Guntur District, Andhra Pradesh, India, for an irrigation application depth of 75 mm with a stream size of 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80 and 90 lps. To optimize the efficiency of the design, the model was run varying the basin design dimensions and cutoff times. The outputs of BASDEV, is intended to improve the overall efficiency of basin irrigation system, provided optimum field dimensions for border irrigation in medium textured soils.Keywords

This study was carried out to determine the total water requirement needed for 10000 hectares of rice, cotton, maize, chillies, black gram, green gram, sugarcane and other crops are commonly grown in the area, which are being cultivated in appapuram channel command of Krishna Western Delta (KWD) in Kharif and Rabi seasons, respectively. In KWD, water is supplied continuously until about 10 days before harvesting. Water is required to bring the fields to saturation, and to establish a layer of water in the fields to facilitate land preparation, Saturation of water, effective rainfall, evapotranspiration and seepage percolation will be calculated for determination of crop water requirement during the pre-saturation and normal growth periods. The computer simulation model AquaCrop was applied to estimate crop water requirements and yield of rice, cotton chilli, and maize green gram and block gram crops grown in both the seasons. The decennial meteorological data for years 2000-2015. The study showed that the total of 1010, 656.0, 573.3, 816.2, 672.2 mm and 552.2 mm of irrigation water for paddy maize blackgram chilli, cotton, and green gram crops during Kharif and Rabi seasons, respectively which clearly show that there is a misutilization of canal water and non-utilization of ground water to the extent recommended hence the area under cultivation is also lower than the actual potential.Keywords
