It could be said that the most serious and important social and ethical problems facing medical education are those that originate in the transformations that medical schools and academic health centers have weathered throughout the last four decades. The long-standing tendency of medical educators to attach “magic-bullet” significance to the power of designated courses to positively influence and professionally shape the attitudes and behavior of medical students and young physicians seems unduly optimistic, and somewhat misdirected.- Lasker Awards are Better Reflective of Overall Medical Excellence than the Medicine Nobels

A few weeks ago, a group of young physicians approached me with the request that I should expound on the major concerns I have about the future of the medical profession in light of my five decades of experience in India and ten other countries around the globe. The interactive session was very instructive for me as it left me with a sense of reassurance that at least a section of the young professionals has trepidations about the direction our profession is taking.- Importance of Genetic Counseling in Everyday Medical Practice

Medical practitioners, usually, are not very comfortable when required to make clinical and prognostic judgments and inferences on matters that entail genetics. Hardly surprising as most of them, myself included, were not adequately equipped with genetic insights into the development, treatment, and prognosis of illness. Part of this reluctance I believe is because of the inherent aversion among clinicians to keep themselves sufficiently abreast with advances in basic sciences. In no other specialty is the interplay between basic and clinical sciences as crucial as clinical genetics.- Rustom Jal Vakil – The Lasker Laureate who Bridged the Gap Between the Indian Experience and Western Medicine

No list of medical stalwarts of modern Indian medicine would carry any credibility unless it includes Rustom Jal Vakil who has appropriately been appellated many historian of Indian medicine as the father of Indian cardiology. His stellar contributions were recognised and applauded all over the world and while his main field of interest remained cardiology, his researches made a worldwide impact on many specialties.- Should We Make a Provision for Joint Medicine-Law Training Programmes?

A nother young Bollywood actor has ended up taking his life. Outwardly, he had appeared stoic and wore a cheerful disposition and none of his kin were able to appreciate the inner turmoil he must have been going through for some time which finally convinced him that he would be unlikely to emerge from the throes of hopelessness that had en-gulfed him. I am reliably advised that he was a very popular actor with a massive fan following, and had through sheer hard work ensured himself a very salu-brious lifestyle in one of the posh localities in Bombay.References

I have, right from my days as a medical student, wondered why it was considered necessary for dentistry to have an independent existence from the other branches of medicine. It has always appeared bizarre and incongruous. After all dental care is an integral component of health and dental conditions do have a bearing on the other parts of the body affecting nearly every system. It was reassuring to learn that one of the recognized all-time greats battled with the same dilemma.- Biomedical Coordinates of Human Perception

There is an ongoing debate in progress as to the relative merits of a primary/preventive focussed healthcare system versus a healthcare system where the major emphasis is on developing tertiary healthcare needs, with primary and preventive healthcare relegated into background. Each system has its fervent advocates. While we can accept that one model of healthcare may not be suited for all the countries with their differing needs and vastly different sociocultural contexts, it would be instructive to learn a few lessons from one country which has made excellent strides in its healthcare statistics, but with almost an exclusive emphasis on primary and preventive healthcare. Keywords

As the entire planet grapples with the COVID-19 pandemic, there is a disproportionate attention on finding an effective vaccine and pharmacological agents that would provide us with the armamentarium to take on the offending virus. However, when we look at the historical management of infectious pandemics, it becomes very clear that any effective strategy to contain a pandemic of the nature that we are confronted with now would necessarily have to factor in the medical anthropological dimension. Keywords

We have just gone through the yearly ritual of enunciating the special needs of the mentally ill on World Mental Health Day. Years of campaigning by human rights advocates have prompted the United Nations to recognize the human rights of the mentally ill through a resolution by the United Nations Human Rights Council. However, the sad fact remains that most coun-tries in the world have not even seen fit to ratify this resolution, let alone treat it with the degree of urgency it clearly merits. The plight of the mentally ill is a matter of collective shame for the entire humankind. But the platitudes have not translated into visible benefits that have percolated down to the ones who need them. Problems also persists because of faulty plan-ning and overall apathy. These have to be addressed head-on if we truly mean to improve the lot of the most disadvantaged among us.Keywords
