Highly toxic and potentially carcinogenic phenolic compounds are discharged in effluents from various industries and need to be removed. Among various techniques and methods available for treatment and removal of phenol, biological treatment methods have proven very effective. Biodegradation of industrial phenol in an anaerobic environment was studied in batch flask system with synthetic industrial effluent. The mixed anaerobic culture was developed and used for the treatment of the phenolic waste. Batch experiments were carried out in four different digesters at four different temperatures each with working volume of 1000 ml for 25 days. Maximum B.O.D, C.O.D, T.S, T.D.S and V.S removal of 538 mg/l, 2217 mg/l, 140 mg/l, 90 mg/l and 60 mg/l was at 400C respectively. Reduction in the value of these parameters proved the biodegradation of phenolic waste.
