Cropping Pattern in Sivasagar District, Assam, India:A Case Study

Sivasagar is one of the agrarian districts of Assam. More than 70% people of the district depend on agriculture. Hence the study of the pattern of agricultural activities in the district bears immense significance. In the current age of unemployment, there is enough scope of engaging the people in agricultural activities keeping in view of their self-sufficiency and strengthening their economic base in the district. However, it is observed that despite a large scale of farmers are engaged in agricultural sector in the district, the output of their labour is not seen quite satisfactory. It is directly or indirectly due to lack of sufficient capital of the farmers, insufficiency of irrigation facility, continuity of traditional cropping pattern, the farmers’ incompetency of applying modernized technologies in cultivation etc. Hence, a systematic and scientific research is highly felt required in exploring and assessing the cropping pattern in the district.
