The 2016 edition of Annual Review of Pathology continues to maintain the high standard that the series has had over the years. This volume begins with a favourite section of mine, the autobiographical essay. This time it is by Michael B.A. Oldstone, one of the pioneers of the field of viral pathogenesis. His article tells us about his research on Lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) and how it has become a 'Rosetta stone for solving several important puzzles in biology' and has helped clarify many concepts in virology and immunology. It sparkles with wit. He tells us about his introduction to anatomy dissection where he has a 'nameless cadaver and four classmates with names...' and how he has been wedded to LCMV, but has had a number of intense affairs with measles and influenza viruses.Full Text

What is genius? ‘She’s a genius’ is a phrase that is often used rather loosely and in different contexts – right from describing Nobel Prize-winning scientists to sports-persons who manage feats not easily accomplished by others. The Oxford English Dictionary defines genius as ‘native intellectual power of exalted type; extraordinary capacity for imaginative creation, original thought, invention or discovery’. Genius has been the subject of study and wonder for centuries by scientists and laymen; for instance, the May 2017 issue of National Geographic has a cover feature on genius.Full Text

The article by Vahia and Halkare1 is innovative and the authors are correct in stating that we need to document myths before they disappear under the garb of development. However, there are a couple of errors that need to be corrected. Figure 6, which is also shown on the cover, refers to the belt of Libra, instead of the belt of Orion. In Greek mythology, Orion was a hunter; the three stars represent his belt, beneath which, at an angle lies his scabbard. The scabbard is of importance to astronomers as it contains the spectacular Orion nebula (also termed M42). Libra, were it to be depicted in this map of the heavens, would be a little to the east of Scorpius.Full Text

Cholera, an ancient scourge, has claimed several million lives. This highly infectious and virulent diarrhoeal disease persists as a global health threat, estimated to cause 1.3 to 4.0 million cases, and 21,000 to 143,000 deaths annually. Cholera poses a problem not only in developing countries but also follows natural disasters. Epidemics in areas with poor sanitation and overcrowding, with limited access to clean water, highlight the need for better prevention and control measures. An outbreak of cholera was declared in Yemen, as recently as 2016 and is ongoing in 2019. Public awareness and research are imperative for the eradication of this dreaded disease.Full Text
