Abstract

The present study is the outcome of a team research undertaken at the Population Research Centre of the Gokhale institute of Politics and Economics. The study tries to calculate the cost of providing hospital services on a per capita basis spread over seven districts of Maharashtra in the year 1999-2000. Average cost is calculated separately for each of the components like fixed and variable cost. An inter-districts comparison is also attempted to show the spatial difference in cost associated with hospital services. Lastly it argues the case of increasing efficiency in two ways: (i) by increasing the entitlements to health care and (ii) by lowering the costs.

Abstract

For a closer forecasting and control of money stock, movements in the reserve money and in the reserve money multiplier both need to be watched. Between the two, the variations in the former are decidedly the more dominant. But those in the latter are not negligible at all. Besides, minor variations in the multiplier cause large absolute changes in the money stock. The present study concentrates on examining the variations in the multiplier, assuming that the variations in the reserve money will be examined separately.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to test the empirical validity of the theoretical model of portfolio selection by banks originally briefly illustrated by Karlin [1] and further developed by Porter [5] and Orr and Mellon [4]. The present author has elsewhere reformulated this model in a manner in which it can systematically analyse the portfolio choice of banks in situations involving any number of assets and alternative regimes of reserve requirement regulations [2].
