Abstract

The present paper intends to Indentify the correlates of family planning acceptance. The data collected during National Fertility and Mortality Survey, Maharashtra (1980) were used for the study. A multivariate generalised linear model has been adopted for the purpose. The unit of analysis is the individual woman. Variables such as caste, education, number of living sons, number of living children have been included in the analysis. The application of the model revealed that the existing number of children/son has a closer association with acceptance of contraception rather than the education or caste variables.

Abstract

The present survey in Nasik district is the last but one survey in the series of evaluation surveys conducted by the Population Research Centre (PRC), Gokhale Institute, Pune in the five socio-ecological regions of Maharashtra State. Two districts each from the Konkan region (Kolaba and Ratnagiri districts), Vidarbha region (Nagpur and Yeotmal districts), Maharathwada region (Bhir and Aurangabad districts) and Western Maharashtra southern region (Sangli and Satara districts) have already been covered in the past few years. Nasik district belongs to the northern part of Western Maharashtra region.

Abstract

Maharashtra is the third most populous state of India. According to 1981 census, Maharashtra had a total population of 62.8 million, constituting 9.4 per cent of India's population. Maharashtra also stands third among the major states, in respect of per capita state domestic product and in respect of energy generation and consumption. As regards education, Maharashtra comes next to Kerala State. Among the major states of India, Maharashtra has the highest proportion of urban population. It also leads in the family welfare programme and couple protection rate. By March 1985, 40.8 per cent of eligible couples in Maharashtra were protected by sterilization, 7.4 per cent by IUD and 3.5 per cent by other methods according to official statistics.
