Though interest in farm costing in Great Britain dates back to a little before the first world war, the British Government started taking active interest in this subject only in the 1920's when the first 'Advisory Economists' were appointed to 15 provincial advisory centres located either at agricultural colleges or at agricultural departments of universities. Very little was achieved initially on the national level because of lack of co-operation between different advisory centres and the absence of an agreement among them on methods of cost accounting and research.
